What Does BaZi Mean?

BaZi (八字), literally "Eight Characters" in Chinese, is an ancient system of Chinese astrology also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny. It uses your birth date and time to create a chart that reveals your personality, strengths, weaknesses, and life potential.

The Four Pillars Explained

Your BaZi chart consists of four pillars, each containing two characters (one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch):

The Five Elements in BaZi

Every character in your chart is associated with one of the Five Elements (Wu Xing):

The balance of these elements in your chart determines your personality traits and life patterns.

How is BaZi Different from Western Astrology?

While Western astrology uses the position of planets at your birth, BaZi focuses on the cyclical patterns of time itself. It uses a 60-year calendar cycle combining the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches. BaZi is particularly strong at predicting timing — when opportunities and challenges are most likely to occur.
