Translating 兰 simply as “orchid” is convenient, but historical dictionary entries also use it for fragrant herbs that are not identical to the modern ornamental orchid. That broader aromatic association matters more than identifying one exact flower species in a fictional name.

Read as a name, 嘉兰 suggests an admired lan flower or herb. It is not a fixed English sentence, and the individual characters do not prove anything about the character’s fate or personality. Its value to the story lies partly in belonging to the Shen family: changing the surname changes the identity others see.

According to WeTV’s synopsis, Jialan assumes the identity of Xu Lanxiang after her family is destroyed. 许 is the surname of the identity she takes. 兰香 combines the fragrant plant with 香, “fragrance,” making the floral image explicit. The title 兰香如故 then repeats her assumed given name as its opening two characters.
That overlap allows a reader to hear both a literal fragrance image and a reference to the heroine. It does not mean that the production has published one definitive symbolic interpretation. Names in fiction can carry several associations at once.
One detail matters for English readers: 沈嘉兰 and 许兰香 are two different full names, not alternate romanizations of the same Chinese characters. The shift from Shen to Xu is a family-name shift; the shared 兰 links the given names visually and aurally.

WeTV names Lin Jinqi as the male lead. 林 is a surname. 锦 can refer to brocade and, by extension, something splendid or ornate. 岐 is associated with branching paths and the place-name Qishan; it should not automatically be read as a prediction that the character faces a “fork in the road.”
锦岐 has a polished, literary sound suitable for the drama’s setting. As with 嘉兰 and 兰香, a character-by-character gloss is useful context, not a certified translation of the complete fictional name.

The best lesson from Against the Current is how a name can carry sound, image, family identity, and story role simultaneously. Borrow that method before borrowing any exact name.
