Find Your Core Identity
The Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — it represents you. This is the most important character in your entire chart.
Look at the top character of your Day Pillar (the third pillar from the left). This is your Day Master.
The 10 Day Masters

What Each Pillar Represents
Your chart has four pillars, each covering a different life period and aspect:
- Year Pillar (年柱): Ancestry, early childhood (ages 1-15), your roots and family background
- Month Pillar (月柱): Youth and young adulthood (ages 16-30), social environment and parents’ influence
- Day Pillar (日柱): Core adulthood (ages 31-50), your true self, spouse/partner, and current life focus
- Hour Pillar (时柱): Later years (ages 50+), children, legacy, and spiritual growth

Analyze Element Distribution
Each character in your chart corresponds to one of the Five Elements. Count how many times each element appears:

- Fire (火): 丙, 丁, 巳, 午 — Passion, energy, visibility, transformation
- Earth (土): 戊, 己, 辰, 戌, 丑, 未 — Stability, nurturing, groundedness, reliability

- Water (水): 壬, 癸, 亥, 子 — Wisdom, adaptability, depth, introspection
What Element Balance Means
- Abundant element: A natural strength — this energy comes easily to you
- Weak element: An area requiring conscious development
- Missing element: A gap that may manifest as life challenges or lessons to learn

Generating and Controlling Cycles
Elements don’t exist in isolation — they interact through two primary cycles:
Generating Cycle (相生) — Support
Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood
Each element nourishes the next. If your chart has Wood and Fire, Wood supports Fire — your creativity feeds your passion.
Controlling Cycle (相克) — Challenge
Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood
Each element controls another. If your chart has strong Wood and weak Earth, Wood may “overwhelm” Earth — your growth energy might destabilize your need for security.

The 10-Year Periods That Shape Your Life
Luck Pillars (大运) are traditional 10-year timing periods calculated from the Month Pillar, sequence direction, and distance to a solar term. They cannot be derived from a zodiac year alone.

Example Interpretation
Let’s say your Day Master is Yang Wood (甲) and you’re entering a Water Luck Cycle:
- Water nourishes Wood (generating cycle) ✓
- This 10-year period supports your natural energy
- A practitioner would next check whether Water is useful in the full chart
- No real-world outcome should be inferred from this one relationship alone
Putting It All Together: A Reading Example
Here’s how to synthesize everything into a complete reading:
- Day Master: “I’m Yang Fire — I’m naturally expressive, warm, and visibility-seeking.”
- Element Balance: “I have strong Fire and Wood, but weak Water. I’m creative and passionate but may struggle with introspection.”
- Missing Element: “No Metal in my chart — I might find structure and discipline challenging.”
- Luck Cycle: “I’m in an Earth cycle. Earth drains Fire (I’m a Fire person), so this decade requires more effort but builds lasting foundations.”
